Summer in Egypt hits hard - and parrots feel it worse than we do. High heat and humidity can be dangerous if you are not prepared. Here is how to keep your bird safe and comfortable during the hot months.
Signs of Heat Stress
Know the warning signs so you can act fast:
- • Panting with an open beak
- • Holding wings away from the body
- • Lethargy and reduced movement
- • Loss of appetite
- • Drinking excessive water
How to Keep Your Bird Cool
Location and Airflow
Keep the cage in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. A ceiling fan on low helps - just make sure it is not blowing directly on the bird. Good airflow makes a huge difference.
Cool Water
Change drinking water several times a day and keep it cool (not ice cold). On extreme days in Cairo, drop a small ice cube in the water dish to keep it cool longer.
Misting
A gentle mist with room-temperature water helps with cooling. Most parrots enjoy a light spray during summer - it mimics natural rain baths and keeps their feathers clean.
Cold Treats
Offer chilled fruit like watermelon, apple, or mango in moderation. Cold fruit is a tasty way to keep your bird hydrated. You can also freeze grapes or berries for a refreshing summer snack.
What to Avoid
- • Never leave the cage on a balcony or in a car in direct sun - temperatures reach dangerous levels in minutes.
- • Do not point an AC vent directly at the cage.
- • Avoid intense training sessions during peak heat hours.
- • Do not serve warm or hot food - the combination of heat and warm food can raise your bird's body temperature.
When to See a Vet
If your bird cannot stand upright, has a red or dark pink tongue, or shows signs of seizures - take them to an avian vet immediately. These are signs of severe heat stress and need professional care.
